NaaS Architecture through SDN-enabled NFV Network Openness towards Communication Service Providers

Résumé

The sharp rise of Over-The-Top (OTT) communication services in recent years has called for greater network-toapplication visibility. Application services like WebRTC represent a foremost drive in the communication ecosystem changes. Faced with such challenges, Telcos should address the current limitations of their network infrastructures and have network and application layers cooperate more closely. Several emerging technologies exist to help change the static nature of networks and facilitate such an evolution. In this respect, we rely in this paper on the benefits of SDN-enabled NFV as a foundation to propose a Telco “Network-as-a-Service” architecture leveraged with a network exposition layer. We instantiate our architecture within the WebRTC-based communication services, illustrating a possible collaboration between network providers and Communication Service Providers (CSPs). We then define three models of architecture deployment to demonstrate the flexibility of our approach : broad, customized and event-based dynamic models. Finally, we present prospective business models and new roles for Telcos in this new environment.
